Teacher Spotlight – Ms. Yhandry Mera
She grew up in Colombia, but now Yhandry Mera calls Florida home after moving here with her family in 1999. She has been teaching Spanish for five years. She taught at USF while earning her Masters before joining the Center Academy Campus in Riverview. Currently, She is teaching Spanish at Riverview and Lutz campus and she is a TA for 10th grade.
“The curriculum at Center Academy is unique from others in that we cater to each individual student’s learning style,” she said. “We care about the student, and not just the grade.”
Ms. Mera said that she gets so much satisfaction from seeing students not only enjoy, but at the same time learn the material. She loves it when she is greeted with “Hola, Ms. Mera”, and when they express gratitude with “Gracias”.
In her spare time, Ms. Mera enjoys working out, jogging and watching soccer. (And lives for cupcakes and desserts! Shhhhh.) Her family is her greatest blessing; she started her own family while working at Center Academy, and joyfully admits that most of her cardio nowadays comes from chasing around a one-year-old!
If given a chance, Ms. Mera would love to have met Gabriela Mistral, the first Latin American woman to receive the Nobel prize in Literature. She was a teacher who influenced the education system in Chile and helped the nation’s poor.
Ms. Mera told us that the secret to her success is “Do what you love, find the positive in everything you do, and surround yourself with positive people.”With this mantra, it’s no surprise that Ms. Mera was chosen for this month’s Teacher Spotlight!
